Library Overview

Barksdale Library has many resources and services to meet your needs.

 

Location

The Mary M. Barksdale Library is located in the upper level of the Whittington W. Clement Learning Resources Center.  The Clement building opened in October 1994.  It is a large, two story brick building in the center of campus. This large, multipurpose area provides instructional support and learning resources for the educational and workforce training programs of the Danville Community College.   Library provides a supportive environment, tools, and expertise that nurture and enhance the teaching and learning process for the entire college community.    Visitor parking is available in all parking lots.   Access is available from the upper level doors

The Mary M. Barksdale Library has books in our print collection, and DVDs and CDs. The library also subscribes to journalsmagazines, and newspapers in our print (paper) periodical collection, found in the Periodicals Room. The Library also has atlases and maps.  
As an academic library, we collect and make available materials that support and enrich courses of study at Danville Community College. Generally, the materials we collect and make available to students, faculty and staff are much more scholarly than the material you find at a public library.

Computers, Printers, Scanners & more

Over 30 computers in the Library provide access to the Internet. In addition to using these computers to search on the Internet, these stations can also be used to access the Online Catalog, Canvas, the Student Information System, and Student Email. Students can also use these computers to access Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. Students can also access the Internet on their laptops by using DCC's wireless network. Please note that playing games is NOT permitted on computers in the Library.  There is no public fax machine available.

Network

- Select MYDCC from the available wireless signals on your laptop or mobile device
- When prompted, log in with your DCC username and password

Charging Stations

- Charging stations for cell phones and tablets are available in the group seating area
- Some study desks are equipped with power outlets that allow for laptop charging

Printers

- Print from library computers only
- Cost: Free for current DCC faculty, staff and students

Scanners

- 2 in the Library
- Cost: free to scan to your own USB

Headsets

- Listen to video or zoom class and reduce noise
- Available at the service desk

Printing

One printer serves all the computers in the Library.  The printers are set to print on both sides of the page, in an effort to conserve paper.  Please use the printers wisely and do not waste paper and ink!

Photocopying

The Barksdale Library provides one photocopier.  We charge $0.10 / page for black and white copies and $0.25 / page for color copies.  Payment can only be made with cash.

Anatomy & Physiology Lab Area

Anatomy models are found in the Periodicals Room.  The Biology faculty place slides on reserve, and microscopes are in this room for students to use.  Many study sessions with Tutors take place in this room.   The Anatomy and Physiology instructors have a variety of items on reserve, including a skeleton, bones, and anatomical models, such as the eye, the ear, the heart, etc. All of these items are located in the Periodicals Room. A sign-in sheet is available in the Periodicals Room for students to indicate the items they are using.

Ask about lost and found items at the Circulation Desk on the Main Floor.

Technology Services in the Library

Library staff are available to keep library technology running smoothly and to help students / faculty / staff with use of library equipment.  

On personal devices, we can help with school related items.  These include:

  • Connecting to wifi
  • Navigating Canvas and MyDCC
  • Using MS Office and other programs
  • DCC / school-related websites (Canvas, Cengage, etc.)
  • Other technology needs related to student academic work at DCC
  • Small repairs to student devices or help them to do things that are directly related to school
  • Feel free to ask for help and we will do what we can
